STORM WATCH (short sketch)

Updated: Oct 23, 2019

By Nathan Warner

Commander Kaa'Po seeks rest from a storm and the Dominion hunt

"Back to the Front!" Commander Kaa'Po barked.

The Rad'Narok shuddered awake beneath him, slowly lifting off, leaving the shelter of the uninhabited planet after a close shave in battle on the Cardassian front.

The Bird of Prey had been deep behind enemy lines collecting intelligence on Dominion fleet activity when a naturally-occurring neutrino cascade had entered the solar system from outside the Galaxy. Dusted by the particles, the cloaked ship lit up like a traffic signal on Dominion sensors.

For the next two hours, the Rad'Narok danced on Jem'Hadar polaron beams, giving better than it got, but still getting singed more than was good for it. The entire Jem'Hadar fleet contingent came after it - the massive Battleships dwarfing the Klingon vessel like condors do a moth.

After several hours of Commander Kaa'Po pushing the Klingon vessel to its limits, leaping port and starboard in time-honored evasion of projectile weapons, the neutrino cascade finally ended and the Rad'Narok slipped back into the invisible corners of space. Kaa'Po watched as the Dominion ships returned from their pursuit to holding a hunting pattern.

"Damage report!" he had bellowed.

"We have a leak in the cloaking manifold," his first officer had reported. "We'll need to repair it immediately!" Kaa'Po scanned the surrounding solar systems himself at the science station.

"There!" he had cried, pointing to the screen, which detailed an uninhabited planet not far from their position. "We'll set down here and nurse our wounds." His men looked up in surprise, but he drew his D'k Tahg for emphasis.

"We do not leave the battle. We will return soon to bloody the noses of those Vorta swine and their Jem'Hadar dogs!" The warriors drew their weapons, pledging themselves anew to death and glory for the Empire, and Kaa'Po swelled with pride. He began to sing, and his men followed:

Hear! Sons of Kahless. Hear! Daughters too. The blood of battle washes clean

The Warrior brave and true.

We fight, we love, and then we kill. Our lives burn short and bright, Then we die with honor and join our fathers in the Black Fleet where we battle forever, battling on through the Eternal fight.

They made the planet in under an hour and landed in a mountain valley, the graceful Bird of Prey settling down like a dragon wearied and wounded by an army's pursuit. But it would not be long before it would return for vengeance on those who had injured it.
