AMONG THE TITANS (sketch)

Updated: Oct 23, 2019

By Nathan Warner

The U.S.S. Titan shadows a pack of giants

"Bring us along side," Captain William Riker ordered. His words were barely a whisper, hardly escaping the awe of the moment as the tidal wave of comets gracefully passed before the U.S.S. Titan on their nomadic pilgrimage towards their hosting star. A few seconds passed before he realized no one had heard him. "Lt. Barrymore, match the trajectory of our friends out there," he said a little more brusquely to the helm.

"Aye, Sir," Barrymore replied, tapping his panel alive. "Matching speed and direction." Outside, the dull red glow of the majestic starship's impulse engines flared into a fiery heat of thrust, and in answer, the Titan surged ahead into the cold darkness to catch the procession of angelic bodies. There were over a hundred comets in this cluster, moving in through the uncharted solar system on the edge of known space.

"Probability of impacts on the planets?" Commander Christine Vale asked the science station. Lt. Avery turned from his readout, freshly blinking the computer's answer.

"Based on the trajectories, there's a 70% chance of a terrestrial impact," she replied. Vale nodded.

The report didn't seem to faze anyone, most likely because the preliminary scans of the system had not detected any life-signs.

"We'll likely see some fireworks," Vale sighed, a little disappointed they were only observers. It would have been "fun" to knock a few comets off course to save the solar system the beating it was going to endure in the hours ahead. Regardless, it was going to be the spectacle of a lifetime. Riker tapped his com-badge.

"Deanna?" he inquired.

"Yes, Will?" she replied from her Counseling offices. Riker couldn't keep the smile from his voice.

"You're going to want to see this!"
